71. Link building
Requesting links from webmasters of other sites for the purpose of increasing your "link popularity" and/or "PageRank."
72. Link exchange
Placing a link to another website on your own site in exchange for a return link back. Also known as reciprocal linking.
73. Link farm
A web page created for search engine ranking purposes that consists entirely of a long list of unrelated links. These types of pages are penalized by almost all search engines, including Google. Otherwise known as free for all links pages (FFA).
74. Link popularity
A measure of how "popular" a web page is on the Internet as measured by the number of inbound links pointing to your web page. Link popularity is one of the main factors used to help determine search engine rankings.
75. Linking
Placing a link to another web page (usually on another web site) on one of your own web pages.
76. Links
URLs placed within a web page so that when they're clicked on the browser is served with a different web page, often on a completely different web site. • Link (Backlink): A link directed to a web document from another web document. When plural (backlinks), the term may refer to a list of all links leading to a document or a domain. • Link (Internal): A connection between two documents in the same web site or domain. • Link (External): A connection between two web documents housed at separate domains. • Link (Reciprocal): An agreed upon exchange of links between two web documents or domains. (Site A places a link to Site B so Site B places a link to Site A to reciprocate)
77. Meta description
A meta tag hidden in the HTML that describes the page's content. Should be relatively short; around 12 to 20 words is suggested. The meta description provides an opportunity to influence how your Web page is described in the search results. Of the major search engines, Inktomi, AltaVista, Teoma, Lycos, and Alltheweb utilize the meta description tag to varying degrees. Make sure they reflect the page content or you may be accused of SPAMming.
78. Meta search engine
A website that takes your search query and passes it on to several different search engines and directories, then summarizes the results in a logical manner for you to review.
79. Meta tags
A meta tag hidden in the HTML that lists keywords relevant to the page's content. Because search engine SPAMmers have abused this tag so much, nearly all of the major search engines ignore this tag completely. Of the major search engines, only Inktomi still pays any attention to the meta keywords tag.
80. Mirror sites
Multiple copies of a site, usually for redundancy and on different servers, are called mirror sites. Registering such sites can be seen as SPAMming by some search engines, and it wise to let only the primary site be crawled. However, they are commonly used legitimately by large websites to share heavy server loads, and by search engine SPAMmers to generate more search engine referrals and revenue.
