41. Frames

An HTML technique which allows a webmaster to display two or more separate web pages within a single browser screen, each potentially with its own scrollbar. A framed website becomes apparent when part of the page scrolls while the rest of the page stays in place. Sites using frames are quite problematic for search engines to crawl and may not be indexed properly. Frames frustrate people because often when the person tries to bookmark a specific page, it instead bookmarks the "frameset" page, which is typically the home page. A framed web site is at a severe disadvantage compared to non-framed sites in terms of search engine marketing. Most search engines support frames, but only, as Google says in its FAQ section, "to the extent that [we] can." Searchers clicking through to a framed page from search results sometimes end up on an orphaned page.

42. Gateway page

See doorway page

43. Google bombing

Occurs when a group of sites such as blogs join forces to link to an unflattering page about a company in such a way that this page rises to the top of the search results in Google. Google bombing takes advantage of the power of hyperlink text and of PageRank. For example, if a group of sites with high PageRank all link to a page about XYZ Company's inappropriate behavior with hyperlink text of "XYZ Company sucks" then the linked page can shoot to the top of Google's search results for the term "XYZ Company."

44. Google bombing

45. Google dance

The name given to the period when Google updates its search engine rankings. Google's main and secondary server results will be different during this time.

46. Google toolbar

A downloadable toolbar for Internet Explorer that allows a user to do a Google search without visiting the Google website. The toolbar also displays the Google PageRank (PR) of the page currently displayed in the browser. The latest version also includes a very good popup-blocker. The Google Toolbar is a must have for every serious webmaster, and can be downloaded here: http://toolbar.google.com

47. Googlebowling

Google bowling is when site-wide links are placed on multiple sites, and the link is pointing at your competition for the sole purpose of eliminating them from the search results. Google’s ranking algorithm will penalize the target site, and the target site will disappear from the SERP’s. You just bowl them over. Is it possible that too many site-wide links will trigger Google’s spam filter? And effectively Googlebowl your competition. Okay, here’s my first bold statement: There is no such thing as too many links. Basically, Google doesn’t count the sitewides any more. Google will only give the site credit for 1 backlink. And, Google isn’t penalizing for a sitewide links. Think about blogs. All those links are sitewide. And, you just get 1 citation rather than 1 for each page. So, if you’re buying a $1,500 site-wide link to rank on Google; it’s WAY overpriced. But, people are willing to pay for it. The benefit of site-wide links is on Yahoo and MSN. So, should you throw out the theory of Googlebowling? Here’s the catch, and how Googlebowling can work…Linking the competitor to bad neighborhoods will trigger Google’s spam filter, and get the site penalized on Google. I guess the NEW definition of Googlebowling is: Site-wide inbound links coming from bad neighborhoods, and using a competitive term as the text link’s anchor text. Using sitewide links are probably the #1 Black Hat strategy to rank on Yahoo and MSN. Hence, Googlebowling. But remember, Googlebowling only works if the links come from bad neighborhoods, and the site has multiple offenses. source: http://www.shimonsandler.com/?cat=12

48. Heading tags

HTML tags that help outline a web page or draw attention to important information. Keywords located inside header tags can provide a rankings boost in the search engines. An HTML tag is often used to denote a page or section heading on a web page. Search engines pay special attention to text that is marked with a heading tag, as such text is set off from the rest of the page content as being more important. Examples:

This is an H1 tag.

This is an H2 tag.

49. Hidden text and hidden links

Text on a website that is hidden to humans but is visible to search engines. Hidden text and hidden links are often used to artificially increase a web page's keyword density for a keyword or keyphrase and/or to artificially boost the link popularity of other pages on your site(s).Simple tricks can be used to obtain this effect, such as using the same background color for the text color, or more elaborate ones using CSS-P. The same effect can also be achieved by using various HTML tricks. Much like hidden links, hidden text is the art of hiding text on the webpage to influence search engine rankings. However, all search engines see hidden text as SPAM, and if caught, your website will incur a penalty and may be banned from search engines.

50. Home directory

The directory where your site's main index page is located. The index page in your home directory can be accessed like this: http://www.yoursite.com
