31. Doorway page

A web page designed to draw Internet traffic in from search engines, and then direct this traffic to another website. The page is usually optimized for a particular search engine and search term. When a surfer visits the page it will either detect their IP address and redirect them to the correct page (cloaking) or it will have a large link for them click through to the full site. Multiple doorway pages are often used to help ensure that the same basic content is ranked well on several different search engines. The use of doorway pages for this purpose is frowned upon by most larger search engines, including Google.

32. Duplicate content

Two or more separate web pages that contain substantially the same content are said to contain duplicate content. Google and other top search engines have set up filters to detect duplicate content when their crawlers are active on the web. When pages containing duplicate content are detected, they are often assessed a duplicate content penalty resulting in a lowering of the page's ranking from what it would have received naturally. Google provides a very thorough description of what they would penalize for duplicate content on their blog at: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2006/12/deftly-dealing-with-duplicate-content.html

33. Dynamic content (dynamic pages)

Web pages that are often generated from database information based upon queries initiated by users. Dynamic pages often include the ? character in the URL. They also frequently use the following extensions: .asp, .cgm, or .cgi. Most search engines do not index dynamic content well, if at all. Google has recently improved their indexing of dynamic content.

34. Dynamic IP address

An IP address that changes every time a computer logs on to the Internet. See also “Static IP Address.”

35. FFA

Free For All. A links page with nothing but links added by visitors.

36. Filter words

Words such as is, am, were, was, the, for, do, et. al,, that search engines deem irrelevant for indexing purposes.

37. Filters

A filter is a software routine that searches for SPAM on web pages during a robot's crawl. If the filter detects the use of SPAM on the page, a ranking penalty is assessed. Common filters look for hidden text, links to bad neighborhoods, and many other SEO techniques that the search engine doesn't like.

38. Flash

A technology developed by MacroMedia Corp. that allows a web designer to embed interactive multimedia into web pages. Often used for Flash intros, games, and animating navigation. If you visit a web page and see letters and numbers flying around with a funky beat in the background, chances are it was done in Flash. Flash requires a plug-in to be installed into the Internet user's web browser. Search engines can't 'read' content embedded in Flash. As such, this content will be invisible to the search engines and will not get indexed.

39. Flash intro

An animated 'short' created using Flash that Internet users are made to sit through upon entry to a home page. Flash intros generally annoy users. They also typically take the place of text content on a home page, and since search engines can't 'read' content embedded in Flash, the rankings of a home page that only uses a Flash intro will suffer.
